How do you detect a fax modem?

I have an hp  notebook Pavilion dv6-3122us and I want to send a fax, but it says no modem detected.  Do I have go and buy a separate modem for the fax, I though the computer came with one?

Hello there! I'm far from qualified, but I've been researching the same thing myself. I just got a new (refurbished) dv7 a week ago and would love the option to send an occasional fax from my PC. From what I've read, and if I understand correctly, a separate fax modem is necessary. I found one at Overstock.com (which is where I purchased my laptop) for $30.00. It is made by starTech... I tried to provide the link which is apparently inappropriate, and I can understand that.

Hello to both you above. This is taken from HP Touchsmart 600-1050 direction for sending faxes from computer. That insert stuff on this web-site doesn't work. So I will list the steps for you both.   1.Connect phone line to computer.   If your computer needs an external modem, connect the phone to the modem, and then connect the modem to your computer. 2. On the toolbar, click New Fax. 3. Follow the instructions in the setup wizard to connect to a fax modem and then, when you're finished , create your fax.  Or you can just purchased a HP 410-A printer They are not expensive It's an all in one has everything and some. Fax, Photo , Double sided printing, scanner and is wireless and you can print from any where in the world just send info to your printers e-mail. Good Luck.
