How long does the battery last on a regular basis?

I bought my computer a year ago, and it does not get used much, but recently it has begun not to charge and now it is saying that it needs a replacement battery. Is this normal? I am still under factory warranty can I send the battery in to get replaced, or is it not covered under the warranty?
