I would like to open up the back of my laptop to thoroughly clean out the fans. I have very little technological knowledge and so don't know what screws to leave in or take out. How can I do this and am I putting my laptop at any kind of risk? Is there a chance I may lose any files, programs or saved settings?

If you don't mind me asking, why do you need to take apart your laptop to clean the fans. Just get the compressed air cans and spray the fans.
As per your statement "I have very little technological knowledge and so don't know what screws to leave in or take out." With that being the case, you could loose more than just files, you could mess up the hardware among other things. If you really want to risk all that and open up your laptop, let me know.
