How do I move applications and data from my old laptop (Windows XP) to my new HP laptop (Windows 7)?

You cannot transfer applications from Windows XP to Windows 7. Applications need to be installed seperately again on Windows 7 system. Here are couple of links that give you step by step guide to transfer data from Windows XP system to Windows 7 system:
