My DVD/CD Drive is not working :(

Hi All,

I am using HP pavillion DV6 notebook and my warranty just expired and i have no access to online chat i think anymore. My DVD ROM shows properly but can't detect any inserted CD/DVD.

I tried all troubleshooting options available on HP Support excelt last one but couldn't get issue resolved.

Even it can't detect disc which is supported by drive.

Would appreciate and thank to someone who can help me to get rid of this issue!

Thanks

PS: I rarely used this drive so you can say it's almost new.

Re: My DVD/CD Drive is not working :(

Hi,

First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.

Windows 7

Vista

Check if the drive is now working.

If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.

sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )

Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.

Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

Re: My DVD/CD Drive is not working :(

Hi,

Open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager, open up DVD/CD-ROM Drives,  right click the drive and selectProperties - is there an error code showing here and if there is, what is it?

Re: My DVD/CD Drive is not working :(

Hi,

It is possible that there is a hardware issue with the optical drive.

As a further test, try the following.

Follow the procedure on the link below and use another PC to create a bootable Ubuntu CD and follow the steps in Part 3 to 'Try it' to see if this OS will run on your notebook.  The 'Try it' option runs the OS from the CD without the need to install on your HDD.  If this runs Ok ( it will be slow running from a CD ), this will help to rule out a problem with the drive itself.

Let me know.

Re: My DVD/CD Drive is not working :(

Hi,

Thanks for reply. I have checked as per HP ways to check hardware from Bios, and i think there is no issue with hardware.

As for your Ubuntu os process, it seems a bit long but why can't i just check a bootable xp or other OS CD to see if it can read it or not, what's special with ubuntu??

Thanks

Re: My DVD/CD Drive is not working :(

Hi,

Ubuntu was purely a suggestion, any bootable disc will be fine.

Re: My DVD/CD Drive is not working :(

Hi,

It does look like the drive may have failed, but post back with the full Model No. and Product No. of the notebook ( from the service tag underneath your notebook ) - see Here for a further explanation.
