Actually, my fairly new HP HAS a built in "bumper" that lifts the back off the surface it rests on... but it's apparently not enough... I appreciate the ruler suggestion, and have temporarily stuck a stapler under the back to lift the machine further, and it does seem a little cooler -- but the fans still running noisily... I think perhaps some program is running in the background and shutting down the computer entirely doesn't shut that down...oh well!
ANY other ideas/advice will be welcome.
