well I'm not sure if you hit enter too soon on this one, but can you boot into the BIOS by tapping the "f10" key on boot?
If so run the memory and hard-drive diagnostics.
It could be you have some loose or bad memory.
You can try reseating it your self and trying each memory module one at a time.
I'm not sure exactly what model you have I wouldneed the Product number (PN) from the bottom of your notebook.
Here is a link to a page that has the Maintenence and service guide, it has steps on how to do that

Product: VB433AV
Model DV45-1500
I just switched it off on beeping by pressing the power button. It then started normally. This time when I restarted, Windows prompted me that since the computer did not shut down properly you can start the start up diagnostic, which I did.
So do I need to wait for another beep to press f10 or can I go ahead with it next time?
Thanks a lot

you can do it any time you boot from being completly shut down, just make sure you're shut down and then turn it on and start tapping the "f10"key until you get into the BIOS.
Then you will see the Diagnostic tab.
