Num Lock Not Working - Pavilion dv-6 notebook

I have a Pavilion dv-6 2155dx laptop.  Windows 7.   It's worked fine until recently.  The ON/OFF bell seems to work ok but the number pad does not work correctly.  It does "strange" things now.  Some keys do "something" and others do not as follows:

/ types a slash

* types an asterisk

- types a minus sign

+ types a plus sign

ENTER seems to be ok

7, 8, 9, 4, 6, 1, 2, 3, DEL do nothing

5 UNhighlights anything highlighted in a browser search bar.  If nothing is highlighted then 5 does one of several things:  brings up PAGE NAVIGATION  option, moves flashing cursor one space to left OR causes flashing cursor to disappear altogether.

0 seems to now and then cause the flashing cursor to disappear.

This has got to be something easy that I probably accidentally screwed up.  I have searched online for a solution to no avail.  I have tried to go into BIOS but directions I found did not get me to menus described to me.  Hopefully someone can set me straight.  Thanks in advance!

Jim

Re: Num Lock Not Working - Pavilion dv-6 notebook

UPDATE: I use this laptop with a wireless keyboard. Problems with number pad are same on both keyboards. Tried On Screen Keyboard...it seems to work fine. Hope this helps.

Re: Num Lock Not Working - Pavilion dv-6 notebook

This forum has been very disappointing...more so than any other I've frequented.    When it comes to finding my post and any replies to it, unless I am missing something, it's way too difficult.  I'm used to forums which have an obvious where you can click on your posts.  Also used to email notification when someone replies to your post or one you are subscribed to.  I see neither of these here.  Then to add to the difficulty the location of the post changes from day to day.  One day it's on page 1, the next on page 2 and none of them seem to be in order of date posted.  Again, maybe I am missing something and someone will explain it to me.  Otherwise, the site basically sucks.

Maybe my opinion is somewhat biased having just got off the phone with HP Support.  The first rep assures me that though I am 500 days out of warranty there is a service to help people like me.  I explain that I am not interested in a pay for service plan.  He again assures me "there is a service to help".  The next rep listens to my explanation and tells me I can either pay $14.99 for "one month of service" ; unlimited 24/7 service for one month".  THen adds "but we do (ask) that you commit to 12 months" (or words to that effect).  OR you can pay $59 for a one-time assistance.

NO THANKS!  I purchased this HP notebook as sort of a test.  They won't get my business again.

I still have my computer problem but I feel better now.  So off to find another place to post this.

Re: Num Lock Not Working - Pavilion dv-6 notebook

Here's the answer to my problem: Control Panel>Ease of Access>Change How Your Keyboard Works>Control The Mouse With The Keyboard> UNCHECK THIS BOX.

I don't remember or why or even if I checked the box but my girlfriend sat down with me today and we stumbled on that as the solution. Now my keypad works just fine.

After finally phoning HP Support and being offered either $14.99/month (12 month contract required) OR $59 for a one-time help session I declined.  Not really impressed with that or with apparent lack of presence or influence on this forum.

Again, THANKS for trying to help me out here!
