Pavilion DV7 touchpad behaviour is unpredictable and strange - mouse behaviour

I would also like to register my strong distaste for the dv7 touchpad. Maybe it's the surface material?

At any rate, a few things have sort of helped me, so I thought I'd share.

1-In Mouse Settings, under the Device tab, under Scrolling, uncheck all the "enable scrolling" options or every time you touch that bar on the right side, it acts like a scroll bar and the mouse jumps all over the screen.

2-Also under the device tab, under Tapping, enable Tap zone. This helped with the sensivity of tap area for some reason.

3-Never, ever update Windows 7 when you own an HP or your pointing devices and microphones and whatnot just get reset and decide not to work anymore

4-Next time remember to buy a non-windows 7 operating system for your not-HP

I ended up returning two versions of this computer after realizing that the mouse was buggy:

(1) the mouse frequently moved my cursor position when I typed (even with the palm sensor on). I discovered that it wasn't because I was touching the mouse pad, but something internal to the laptop. This makes it virtually impossible to write a document that is longer than a few sentences without multiple corrections.

(2) the two-finger scroll and other "features" are really problematic. They sometimes work, but more often they don't. The problem isn't necessarily HP, but rather the synaptics driver and touchpad design. Just bad design all around.

I also noticed extremely slow responses and poor video qualtiy.

Like I said, I got so frustrated and returned the HP after a day or two. I ended up buying a Toshiba, which works more reliably. (never getting a Dell).

NOW I find this... after weeks of searching for the EXACT right machine. This touchpad situation makes me want to cry because I spent my entire savings on this PC, only to find that the touchpad is TOTAL GARBAGE. 

Exactly what everyone else is upset about, with no way out.

This comes after a defective harddrive replacement after 2 months of use.

HP needs to help solve this situation because I keep my notebooks for 8-10 years and I meet HUNDREDS of people every week, OFTEN w/ my notebook open. If the problem occurs during our session, it becomes a conversation and HP will undoubtedly be losing MANY more potential customers after they have to listen to me complain.

Maybe there's hope. I was almost completely happy with my DV76157CL until I noticed my touchpad doing strange things, too. In desperation, today I tried shutting off all of thetouchpad's special features. (I never got used to the scrolling and don't miss it, now that I've shut it off.) Now it works like a garden-variety touchpad, and I'm fine with that because it WORKS the way I expect it to. So like my computer again!

Since trying the feature shut-off I've seen that others have tried doing so successfully, too. So maybe this'll salvage your computer as well. I hope HP and/or Synaptics comes up with a patch or acknowledges the problem and suggests (if you feel you don't need them, or if "they're getting in the way") shutting off the extra features. It IS a bit strange to see so many folks irate at a maddening feature of their HP computers complaining on an HP-hosted site. You'd think they'd have noticed by now!

OMG, this has been a serious problem for me since day one of buying this DV7. The mouse button jumps all over the place. Before I am finished typing email, it sends it. When I'm watching a video online, the pointer jumps to next video. When I'm on Ebay, it clicks bid without me ever clicking. It's really dangerous! I really hate this computer. The worse thing is when the left mouse button becomes disabled while typing up something that took forever and you can't save it.

To fix this issue, make sure you check the box next to Momentum.  You need to go to control panel, select Synaptics icon (touch pad utility) and under the pointer, make sure you click and select Momentum and your and click on apply and okay and your problem will be fixed forever.   HP....you owe me big time for this tip.

After months of frustrating erratic touchpad behaviour on my HP laptop following a clean install of Windows 8, I found the solution. Download the latest Synaptics driver.

The clean install of Windows 8 eliminated all the HP drivers and proprietary programs, which I was happy to get off my computer anyway. But the generic touchpad driver in Windows 8 did not work well at all.

After installing the latest Synaptics driver, my erratic touchpad behaviour has gone away. Finally, peace and satisfaction!
