Pavilion dv7-1273cl Battery Issue

I recently rebuilt a Pavilion dv7-1273cl laptop a friend gave me. I replaced the hard drive and installed Vista and the drivers (I ordered the recovery discs for the machine from HP), Everything works great except one fairly serious issue. When I plug in the AC adaptor most of the time the power light, battery light, and disc drive light blink simultaneously which I believe indicates the battery is not charging. At other times the battery light comes on and stays steady which I believe indicates the battery is charging. When I check the battery status it indicates the battery is fully charged. When I remove the AC adaptor, the laptop stays on for about three minutes then shuts off. This kept up for a couple of days. Now, the laptop will not start up at all if the battery is installed. I am writing this post on the laptop using AC power with the battery removed. I am pretty sure that I just need a new battery, but before I buy one, I was hoping someone could let me know if there could be another issue at play. Can a bad battery actually cause the laptop to crash even though it is plugged in? The machine runs like a dream without the battery installed. If anyone can shed some light on this for me before I buy a new battery? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so I tried clicking your link sir, and it doesn't take me to anything useful at all.  I am having a simmilar problem to the gentlemen above, except mine has gone a step further and now randomly shuts down even while plugged into the AC Adapter.
