Some shifted keys on my HP HDX18 notebook keyboard do not work.

I have an HP HDX18 Notebook PC. Some of the shifted keys on the keyboard do not work. For example, the left Shift + Z does not work, although right Shift + Z does work. I can type all of the uppercase letters using the Shift Lock key.

Even if I enter Setup on boot up, this happens, so I doubt it could be a virus.

But I'm unable to type an exclamation point, and most of the other symbols.

I replaced the keyboard. I thought it had to be the keyboard but the new one has the same problem.

Some days it works perfectly though. I think if the notebook has been on for several hours may be a factor.

So I use an external keyboard and it works fine. But it would be better not to carry around my external keyboard.

If I don't have the external keyboard with me, I use the on-screen keyboard which works okay but it is not an optimal solution.

Hello softwaretailor,

Your keyboard is not working correctly.

Go to device manager, uninstall the keyboard and restart the computer.

This will uninstall and reinstall the driver for the keyboard.

Here is a link to device manager.

If it has not been to long since the problem started, you can run a system restore.

This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly without affecting your personal files.

Here is a link on how to do a restore.

Let me know how everything goes

Have a good day.

Re: Some shifted keys on my HP HDX18 notebook keyboard do not work.

Per your suggestion, I uninstalled the keyboard devices (there are 4) and rebooted twice. All 4 devices came back.

But it didn't fix the problem.

Re: Some shifted keys on my HP HDX18 notebook keyboard do not work.

softwaretailor,

Do a hard reset.
Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.

This should reset the hardware in the computer.

As you turn the computer back on tap the F8 key, this will load advanced boot options.

Click safe mode and see if you are having the problem in safe mode.

Let me know how everything goes

Re: Some shifted keys on my HP HDX18 notebook keyboard do not work.

Hi again,

I did what you suggested, 3 times. But it didn't fix the problem.

I'm quite sure the keyboard drivers are getting reinstalled because I get a message that I have to reboot again in order to have the reinstalled drivers take effect.

I thought you had a good idea, but it didn't fix it.

Re: Some shifted keys on my HP HDX18 notebook keyboard do not work.

softwaretailor,

Was the problem happening in safe mode?

Turn off the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.

When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.

Since the external keyboard is working, I’d suggest running a restore or recovery.

Here is a link to run the recovery.

Re: Some shifted keys on my HP HDX18 notebook keyboard do not work.

Hi Anthony,

I think my previous reply didn't go, so I'll repeat it just in case.

I did the F9 default in setup. It didn't fix it.

I did the Safe mode reboot. It didn't fix it.

I did a System Restore back to 11/8/2009 (from my external backup drive). It didn't fix it.

Re: Some shifted keys on my HP HDX18 notebook keyboard do not work.

softwaretailor,

It has to be something related to the software and it does not seem like it is the drivers.

I suggest running the system recovery.
