Hi.
Have a bit of a problem with a Compaq Presario CQ61 running Windows Vista 32-bit SP2.
When starting up windows 'normally', it will startup to the point where the windows desktop is displayed and then switch off.
This is repeatable.
However, if windows is started in safe mode it will startup OK (in safe mode).
Subsequent startups in normal mode will be OK and the PC will operate fine for the rest of the day.
However, after the PC has been switched off for some period of time (certainly overnight) then when started in normal mode it will switch off and continue to do this until PC initially started up in safe mode after which it will startup in normal mode OK.
I have ran (HP - option available at switch on) diagnostics on the HDD and the RAM - all appear to be OK.
I have ran virus scans, including rootkit scans - no problems indicated.
Using MS Config, I have disabled first all those startup programs and then services loaded at startup. This made no difference.
I have installed the latest drivers from the HP website (only two required updating, the wireless and the mousepad) - no difference.
I have used windows update to ensure the OS is up to date - no difference.
Any ideas?
Take care,
Mike

Hi
You have a couple of options as I see it please find the steps and weblink given below might help you to resolve your issue.
1) Do a Msconfig weblink given below.
2) Try doing a system restore from safe mode itself to the date where unit was working fine.
Using Microsoft System Restore
Let us know how it goes!

Thank for the reply, Manjunath.
I had already used MSConfig to disable startup items and services - this made no difference.
The earliest I could restore the system to was 9th of April of this year.
Restoring to this date made no difference.
Examination of hardware doen't indicate any obvious problems (hardware/device manager)
Examination of system reliability reports indicate that reliability began to drop off mid November 2011, with most problem related to Internet Explorer (v 8) or unexpected system shutdowns.
I uninstalled all applications installed since the beginning of November 2011 - no difference.
I am now in the process of system recovery (to original factory state) as this has taken far too long to try to resolve.
Will let you know what happens.
Tkae care.
Mike

Hi all, again.
I have used the HP System Recovery to restore the system to the state it was in when it left the factory (Vista 32 bit, SP1).
Astoundingly the problem remains.
Summary of problem
When the PC (laptop) is switched on after a period of time being off (e.g. in the morning) Windows will startup to the point where the desktop is displayed and will then (usually) switch off. Occasionally it will stay running for a minute or two after displaying the desktop; sometimes when this happens a click (or tap) of the mouse (pad) will result in the instant switch off of the PC. Very occasionally during this extended running time the display will become corrupted with vertical and horizontal bars and stripes.
However if the PC is started up in Safe Mode it starts up fine.
Then, having started the PC in Safe Mode, it will now start up fine in Normal Mode.
So it had to be a software probelm, right?
But restoring the system to the state it was in when factory built did NOT resolve the problem.
I had another hard disk with Ubuntu installed on it and fitted this to the PC.
Guess what?
When Ubuntu reaches the stage where it displays its desktop the PC switches off.
So it cannot be a software problem, can it?
But why will the PC operate fine if first started in (Windows) Safe Mode and then in Normal Mode?
Any ideas?
Could it be a BIOS issue?
Take care all.
Mike

Hi all again.
Having tried fresh installs of Vista and other OSs with the problem remaining I have come to the conclusion that the problem is hardware related although all testing/diagnostics I have tried fail to find any problem.
I have stripped down the system and examined all boards and connections with no obvious problem found.
I suspect that there is a poor connection somewhere on the mainboard, possibly on a via.
I suspect that when the system is cold the connection is open and will not run the OS in normal mode but when the system heats up the connection becomes better and then the system will run in normal mode.
As it is a Vista/Celeron system I will scrap this laptop as it will not be a huge loss, although it annoys me that I cannot locate and repair the fault.
Tkae care all.
Mike
