I am ashamed to say that I'm giving up hope.

Both HP an MS politely logged my requests but there has been little interest in following up, perhaps this obscure issue wasn't enough of a problem and the solution maybe to buy a new laptop. I've bought a logitech usb camera that I now stuff into my travel bag and bring with me. I know that its not the outcome either of us were hoping for.

Just reading this post as the exact same thing happened to me with my Dell Computer.  I loaded a bunch of updates this weekend including SP2 and my internal camera has totally disapeared.  MS should be in the external camera business cause they are going to make me go buy one!
