i have had the same issue with my pavillion dv7 multimedia notebook.  i too purchased this specifically for its blue ray/HDMI capability amongst other  items.

 

the blu-ray drive stopped reading all blu-ray discs.  i spent countless hours chatting/speaking to HP tech support reps who know absolutely nothing!

 

after searching and searching on the internet, i reinstalled the mediasmart dvd application which helped for 5 minutes.  after my computer went through a windows update, the drive AGAIN would not recognize any blu-ray discs.

 

after reading the entry by "kindheart", i took out my trusty compressed air can, directed the air at the lenses and VOILA!  my discs are playing.

 

always keep compressed air and/or lens clothes available.
