I have an HP Pavillion g7 Notrbook PC Windows7  and I keep on getting a popup telling me that my Update System tray has stopped working. It has a very long error message. I am a novice at using a home computer and don't know where to go for help or how to fix it. Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello again jim5840.

So, when you go to the "Startup" tab of msconfig there is no desktop agent tray or anything that looks similar to that?  Before continue with the steps I outline next I'd like you to verify that you don't see anything resembling that name under either the "Services" or "Startup" tabs.

I still believe that this is an application that is being started when you boot into Windows.  So the next step will be to try using a clean boot to resolve the issue.  A "clean boot" means that Windows will only load its system files when it boots and will not load any applications along with it.  Try the following.

  1. Click Start, type "msconfig," and press Enter.
  2. This time you will stay on the "General" tab.
  3. You should see "Selective Startup."  Ensure that this is selected.
  4. De-select "load startup items."
  5. Apply the changes and reboot the notebook.
  6. Post the result.

I will await your reply; have a great day!

Hello jim5840. I understand you're getting the "update system tray has stopped working" error.

Do you happen to have Q-WEST as your ISP? This is a known problem with one of their program's updater processes. You can disable it without doing your notebook any harm. Try the following.

  1. Click Start, type "msconfig," and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to the "Startup" tab.
  3. Click "Startup Item." This will alphabetize the list.
  4. Locate "Desktop Agent Tray" and uncheck it.
  5. Save the changes, restart your PC, and verify that this solves the issue.

Make sure to post the result. I hope you have a great day!

Hello again jim5840.

That shouldn't be a problem.  The steps will be the same for a desktop or a notebook.  Let me know if it resolves your issue.

Have a great afternoon 🙂
