The first thing to do is to enter the BIOS and then run the diagnostic tests that are available there for memory and the hard disk.
Does your notebook have UEFI diagnostics installed?
If it is a recent notebook (2009 or newer) then it probably does. There are advanced diagnostic tests available when starting up that can be accessed by pressing the Esc key and accessing the UEFI diagnostics menu just after pressing the power button.
