dv4-1275mx chkdsk problems

Been having problames ever since I bought my dv4-1275mx where seemingly randomly when 64-bit windows vista home premium starts and I login to my account error messages popup, some what randomly about applications or services that were unable to start.

Restart and chkdsk runs automatically and does the following:

Deleteing index entry browseui.dll in index $I30 of file 8302

Deleteing index entry wininet.dll.mui in index $I30 of file 9053

Deleteing index entry riched20.dll in index $I30 of file 9417

Deleteing index entry crypt32.dll.mui in index $I30 of file 9500

Deleteing index entry urlmon.dll.mui in index $I30 of file 9500

Then:

recovers orphaned files (same as above).  Computer boots up and everything is fine for a while, but it will happen again.

I used Hp recovery to format and reinstall Vista Home premium 64-bit, but the problem randomly persists.

Is this a hardware problem?  Is there an update for vista?  I've seen other complain on Best Buys website as well.

Re: dv4-1275mx chkdsk problems

That looks like hard drive problems (bad sectors). Go into the BIOS (F10) and look for the hard drive self-test and run it.

Ran that overnight last night and when I woke up in the morning it said that the hard drive passed.  I also did the memory test from the bios, everything was fine there too.

Re: dv4-1275mx chkdsk problems

I am having the same issue, exactly, with a dv7-1260us laptop. I have sent it into service, they have replaced the hard drive, and it still happens.  I have tried to convince them it is probably a motherboard issue, because information isn't being written correctly to the hard drive.  The second time I sent it back to them, the 2nd level people kept it for a week and a half, then sent it back saying that they couldn't reproduce the problem, so it is within their normal working order, and returned it back to me.  I now have the laptop ready to run the chkdsk when it turns on, and am going to send it to them so they can watch it.  I'll let you know how that goes.

Re: dv4-1275mx chkdsk problems

The recovery media itself or the image could be the issue. Contact Hp to get a replacement copy.

Re: dv4-1275mx chkdsk problems

My 2nd level tech just found out that they never actually replaced my hard drive even though the support place knew it wasn't working correctly. So, it is going in to actually get replaced this time.

I did get new factory image disks after the fake hardware swap, so I really hope this repair will do the trick!!

Thanks for the response!

Re: dv4-1275mx chkdsk problems

I called tech support and they had me go into the registry and disable the automatic chkdsk.  Of course now chkdsk doesn't run when I boot my machine (not that it did everytime anyway) but now I'm wondering if it's only a matter of time before things become so corrupt that I have to do a complete system recovery.

On another note, the first tech support person I talked to wanted me to buy that recovery CD.  Needless to say, I will not pay for a CD when the data you gave me (on the partition) is bad.  It's rediculous that we have to pay for a CD when the image on our machine is bad and the computer is still under warranty.  I hope HP starts including a disk with the OS on it from now on or I'll be buying something else next time.

Re: dv4-1275mx chkdsk problems

I had the same problem, but the problem was not with chkdsk. The problem was with corrupt files on the hard drive. The problem would get so bad that chkdsk could not repair and on startup Windows would automatically got into the problem solving mode. This usually worked, but sometimes the system would crash after the "fix" had been implemented. I bought the laptop at Best buy, and to make a long story shory, they blamed it on a software problem and did complete restores. I lost so many emails, had to re-register so much software after these restores that I purchased ShadowProtect with incremental backups which helped me not lose information and not have to re-register software. Even that got to be a pain. I suspected that the problem was with Vista 64, so when Windows 7 became available I upgraded to Windows 7. I did not use the HP Windows 7 upgrade, because of the warnings MicroSoft was issuing about some XP applications might not run with Windows 7. Because of this I wanted to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional instead of Home Premimum. The HP upgrade would only allow me to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premimum. Since I upgraded to Windows 7 Professional I had to essentially re-build my whole system. Since doing this I have not been able to find a way to reload HP TotalCare. Because I have had exactly zero problems, where I was having a problem almost weekly and sometimes more than one problem in a week, since upgading to Windows 7 Professional I am considering not loading HP TotalCare. I don't know whether my problem was with Windows Vista 64 or HP TotalCare, but I now have a very stable system. The only problem, I am not sure it is really a probem since my system is so stable, is that when I view all devices installed I get an "unknown device" error. I contacted HP Chat online and they said the problem was with Drive Guard or Drive Protect or something like that. The tech pointed me to a driver that did not work. A couple of days ago I went to the site where I got all of the drivers that HP suggested I needed with Windows 7 and there was now one for this problem. When I loaded that driver and re-started my system it crashed!! I am glad I had a very recent restore point. I would like help from HP, but do not expect much. I have had my laptop for less than a year so it is still under warranty and I also have a 3 year service ageement with Best Buy. Both are absolutely worthless, because I can't get my money back plus something for all of the stress this has caused me for the last 8 months which is the only acceptable solution.

Re: dv4-1275mx chkdsk problems

Hi,

I too have the EXACT same problem with my DV4-1275mx ever since I bought it from BestBuy.com through online. I too have opened a separate thread without knowing about this thread which I just discovered. My thread is
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/board/message?board.id=Hardware&message.id=16242#M16242

Supersweet/Calebw, Did you managed to fix the problem? Please let me know so that I too can follow the same solution you took.

Thank you

Chris

Re: dv4-1275mx chkdsk problems

I finally managed to solve the file corruption problem with my DV-1275mx. Here’s how,

I formatted the windows partition and installed a SEPARATE copy of Windows Vista 64bit (did not use system recovery which uses the factory image). Then I installed all the HP drivers that are available from the HP site except for TV drivers (coz I don’t use the TV and not sure whether my laptop has that capability!!).

After installing all the available drivers from the HP website, I had 2 unknown devices listed under system hardware. I managed to get it solved as follows,

Even though the following drivers were not available to download from the HP web site, I managed to get the missing drivers from C:\SWSetup folder before formatting the C: drive. That folder had almost all the drivers which come with the factory image.

1. ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
2. Windows Vista modem driver package for High-Definition Audio (HDA) modem devices

After installing the above two drivers, I managed to get rid of all unknown devices and the laptop now has all the drivers installed it needs.

Then I went on to install ONLY the following HP software,

1. HP MediaSmart SmartMenu Update (downloaded from HP site) – This will show the volume control bar when you press the elegant volume control touch sensitive buttons on the laptop
2. Lightscribe System Software
3. HP Integrated module with Bluetooth wireless technology
4. HP Wireless Assistant - This shows the info balloon for bluetooth and WLAN when enabling/disabling
5. HP Quick Launch buttons - Brings up the media toolbar for quick launch

I also installed the Vista SP1 and SP2.

After installing only these, I observed the laptop for about 1 month. I NEVER got a file corruption or a check disk issue during this time. Also I ran the SFC /VERIFYONLY command on command prompt and it indicated that the System Files are all OK!!! This is a big achievement!!

Note that I did not do a system recovery using the recovery partition and I did NOT install any of the other HP software (like HP Total care, HP MediaSmart MVP, HP DVD player etc etc)

Having convinced that the system is stable, I am went on to install the regular software that I normally use (Office, photoshop, movie players, Norton, firefox etc etc). But I did not install any of the HP software that I skipped earlier...coz they are useless and I strongly believe that they might be the culprits for file corruptions. After doing this I allowed another 2 weeks to see how it goes. The system continued to remain stable. No problems at all now and the notebook runs smoothly!

Now I am very happy with my DV4-1275MX :smileyhappy: :smileyhappy: :smileyhappy:

Thanks to all those who shared their advice, experience and their own remedies.
