dv6000 Running Extremely Slow [ Edited ]

My laptop (HP Entertainment Pavilion dv6000) is running extremely slow... Booting up takes 2-5 minutes, shutting down takes approx. 2 mins.

Programs take on average 1 minute to start and there is often a significant lag time when completing a task even as simple as typing. Programs such as AIM and Firefox will often freeze.

At times, when I try to adjust the volume in the Taskbar, the Taskbar will freeze and I will have to restart it. 

Lately, my laptop fan "hums" constantly, presumably because it is attempting to cool down. 

At the moment, CPU usage is at 100 althoughmy Spyware detection program is using most of it (about 45-60.) 

I have heard Spyware can do this; my Spyware detection program has detected some bugs but nothing major that seems like it would cause these issues (mainly they are things like "CouponBar.")

What can be causing these problems?
