dv7-4169wm Cooling question

[ Edited ]

Hello,

Hello I recently bought a 17.3 Pavilion dv7-4169wm Laptop and I do some gaming.  I have 2 questions.  I use the Targus dual fan lap desk to keep it cool.  My question is the only spot that gets really warm is on the upper left of the laptop where one of the vents are.  I think it is the main vent.  The rest of the bottom stays cool.  Should I be concerned?  I usually play games for about 2 or 3 hrs a day.

My second question is regarding adding another hard drive.  I know it can support 2 hard drives but the second spot for a drive does not have the rails or the cable.  Where can I purchase these?

Thank you in advance.

John

Re: dv7-4169wm Cooling question

If you bought it recently you should be able to call HP directly and have them figure out what you need for a second hard drive, however I am sure someone on the forum would do the work for you, but I can't right now.

As for the overheating, it is certainly an issue these days with the stronger processors.  My question is how recently you bought it and if you have any pets or if you use the laptop on any soft surfaces like a bed or a couch.  Look at this link:

No I do not set it on soft surfaces.  I have it set on one of the Targus cooling pads with two fans.  It only gets warm in the upper left corner.  Pets, yes we have dogs.  I bought it back on December 23rd.

    thank you

    Re: dv7-4169wm Cooling question

The upper left is where the processor is, pet hair and fibers will get sucked in and choke off the fan, but yours sounds too new for that to happen already.  Again I think this is a design flaw where the processor is too strong for the fan to cool properly.  Tomorrow is 'Ask the Experts' day with actual representatives of HP on the site helping users.  I would re-post this tomorrow with 'for the experts' in the subject line so perhaps then you could get a definitive answer.  If you search the forum for dv7 overheating issues you will find several.
