I have an HP Pavillion 9000, running Windows Vista. I can no longer get the laptop to read any CD or DVD. I can't find drivers etc....
I have tried mr fixit to no avail. I have checked the BIOS, and verified that the boot order sees a CD/DVD drive, even tried to change the order. Device manager does not see a cd/dvd. Registry has no upper or lower filters. HELP! Trying to fix for months. . Feel free to cotnatct me at my user name at yahoo.com

the dvd drive has failed or the controller for the drive on the motherboard has failed.

Thanks, I figured it was hardware, but the CD/DVD opens, tries to read, but then does nothing. Is it possible to fix the controller on the motherboard?

I would try another cdrom drive first.
you have to replace the motherboard if the controller is bad

I have restored computer ( HP pavilion dv6636nr ) to factory settings, checked CD ROM in another computer and its working fine - went to regedit and deleted high/low filters and tried fix it but still no CD drive in device manager. Removed and reseated it a couple times - updated Bios and yes it sees it in the boot order, not the model I have but CD ROM is listed. Not sure wher to go from here?

Well thats it then, if there isn't a software fix then I will just have to live without a CD/DVD internal drive because I see no need to replace a mother board when I can put that money towards a new laptop when and if the rest of the one I'm using crashes hahahaha Hey thanks for your time and help !
