When coming out of hibernation, about once every ten times the fingerprint reader doesn't become active.
Sometimes a sleep/wake will bring it to live, on other occasions I can cover up the reader for a few seconds and it starts working after that. On occasion I have to do a complete reboot.
This is a stock 4080us with Win7 and all the HP fixings still installed.

Installing the latest driver may help you...
BIOS Update, Fingerprint reader Driver, Graphics Driver, Chipset drivers...
have you tried this??? ![]()

Please identify your notebook/pc with more than the series number. Look at the base/rear/side of the notebook/pc at the barcoded sticker. Post items numbered 1 and 2 as seen on the following image.
Post the installed operating system version ( and whether it is 32 or 64-bit)
Best regards,
erico

I have HP and Windows autoupdate turned on. That should take care of all driver and OS updates.
The laptop is a Pavillion dv7-4080us. Windows 7 64-bit version.

I recommend that you update the BIOS to the current version and install all of the Operating System - Enhancements and QFE's. They are located in your notebook's Driver & Software page.
Here is a link to your notebook's web support portal. You should probably save that in your favorites.
I suggest that you turn off AutoUpdate for bothe Windows and HP.
Let Windows and HP tell you what is available, but do not install them until you have had a chance to see what the updates are.
The reason I suggest this is that many PC and notebook owners have had update regret when a major update caused their notebook or PC to fail to boot into Windows. A wait and see attitude pays off.
Best regards,
erico

I updated the BIOS and that fixed the issue - so far. Still, longer than I've gone before without getting the finger print scanner hang up on me.
A bit weird as I had all auto updates turned on and never saw this BIOS I pulled from HP manually.
