If you want to dispose of the harddrive and make it a useless paperweight put a magnet on it and it will destroy all data and render it useless
I currently work on behalf of HP for numerous support departments. The opinions expressed above are the personal opinions of myself, not of HP. There is no guarantee that the opinions expressed are 100% correct.

lol that wasn't alot of help i don't want to mess up the hard drive i want to beable to wipe it clean and i hate to tell you but Factory recovery does not delete everything like if you really need to delete everything on the hard drive like if you got a virus or something that you can not get off your computer and it is harmfull to your computer then Factory recovery will not really help you out. So that why i need to know the hard drive is not being picked up when i use a hard drive erase method. Like d-b'an. And as soon as i get my computer i replace the Factory recovery with the same OS that came with the computer and i don't all that extra crap that hp puts on their computers and laptops. So i just wipe the hard drive clean and replace the OS it saves me alot of time and don't have to mess around with deleting all the extra crap. So no i do not want to mess up my hard drive if i rwanted to dispose of the harddrive i would just take it out and throw it away. lol But i don't mean to so i'mund rude so if you took it as rude then i'am sorry just need help understanding why the hard drive won't pick up

If you have a SATA hdd some utilities won't detect it. Why not just boot with your OS disk and format with that?

because i heard that does not wipe your hard drive clean it is still there like if you had a bad virus it will not really delete it. it will not take it off. doing it this way just formats the hard drive i wanna wipe it clean where it is not there nomore or where it can not be recovered because when i format it i want it gone in case my computer got something my av wasn't able to delete or take care of then if you can not delete it or take care of the infection then the next best thing to do would be to wipe your hard drive clean not format it because if you just format it with a OS disc then it's still gonna be there. I know because i tested this out i so called wiped it with windows vista OS disc and then when the OS was reinstalled i got a program that recovers files and i looked for some of the music i download. And guess what? It was still there. And then i did the same thing with a hard drive wiping program that wipes your hard drive out i let it wipe the hard drive. And then i reinstalled windows vista. Then tried to search for 5 different programs and music that was on the hard drive that i knew was on it before i wiped it out. But i'm not being a smart a** just pointing out that formating it with a OS disc will not delate it will just hide the files. But thanks for your help but for people who want to wipe out there hard drive and not format it will a OS disc then use active kill disk it wil pick up sata drives i have texted it and it works

What kind of ****ing super virus do you have on your computer that makes you want to wipe the whole thing?
I suppose the only way to permanently delete everything with 100% certainty would be to find some application to zero out free space on the whole drive. The only problem would be running the program as it deleted everything. In order to run it, you would need an OS and the program itself... I guess it wouldn't be a problem if you had an extra HDD lying around.
This is a popular program for the task. Again, you will need some alternate way to run it if you need everything including OS files wiped.
If it is something like porn or illegal files you need permanently killed, you can just delete them, and then run that program. They will be gone for good. Just keep in mind that using such programs does put a strain on the disk itself and using it frequently could shorten disk life.

oh ok no i did not have none of that on my computer it is just that i did not run no type of protection on my computer for awhile and i just thought i better just wipe the whole drive just to make sure i got everything off of it but i had used killdisk and it cleared my hard drive like it was a new hard drive but since then i installed windows 7 and put avast of my laptop and everything should run smooth now and i won't wipe it again unless my computer really messes up thanks for your advice

Hi "how do you wipe you hard drive clean???" I have been trying to do the same thing and am having all kinds of problems. The support guy who isn't helping very much shouldn't be asking you annoying questions like why do you want it done, he should simply answer your question.
I tried D'ban also and had the same problem with boot disk. Ater setting up computer to book to CD drive I would receive error message which read somethign like "unable to boot from drive," or "unreadable bootable media, etc."
I also downloaded bcwipe, and actually paid for iolo's "drive scrubber" with no success. My piece of **bleep** envy with win 8 is finally being replaced by HP with a new laptop which has arrived and I want to wipe the old laptops drive before returning it. And, I want to do what you did with the new laptop, which is wipe drive and load win 7 without, as you so accurately put it, all that HP crap that comes pre-loaded so you operating system is already at war with the hardware manuacturer. And God forbid you download an apple product like "i-tunes." Then it becomes armageddon.
Anyway. Would you please write down how you were able to wipe you drive clean, and then how you were able to load win 7 on it? I would really appreciate the help.
