Re: hp Pavilion notebook webcam issue

Re: hp Pavilion notebook webcam issue

Not sure if this would apply to you, but I just had a similar issue that I fixed so it may be worth a try. I found out the problem was a faulty connection to the webcam card located behind the screen. The webcam worked for two years and then suddenly stopped and I would start getting alerts of USB errors. After a lot of playing around I noticed I got it to work briefly but it would be intermittent when I opened the laptop and closed it again. So I finally decided to take the laptop apart and I narrowed the problem to the connection the webcam card is making to the foil groundplane behind it. If you take your webcam out and look on the opposite side (the backside) of the card, you will notice large copper lands on each end of the board and you will also notice copper lands surrounding the holes in the board that place the board onto the plastic guides. The large land on the opposite end of the power connector, and the land surrounding the round hole that the plastic guide goes through (closest to the power connector) are making contact to the foil directly behind it on the top cover. The webcam card is held down snugly by the plastic outer rim that is the border for the laptop screen. This connection needs to be made. Apparently over time, there is enough play that develops that causes the lands from making contact to the backplane. To make sure this issue goes away, try soldering a wire between the large land and the land around the hole closest to the webcam power connector. Also solder another wire to the large end land and strip it about a 1/2 inch on the other side of the wire. The stripped side can be wrapped around one of the screws that tightens the border/rim around the laptop screen. Just make sure the screw you pick also is tightening the stripped part of the wire to the metal chassis. If this is your issue, this will fix it. At least it fixed mine. Good luck!

Re: hp Pavilion notebook webcam issue

I have had similar issues with my webcam suddenly not working and the annoying usb not found messages.  Of course, my HP Pavillion was just out of warrenty when the issue started.  Have spent hours researching the problem, reinstalling drivers, etc. Everything short of opening it up and looking inside (wouldn't know where to begin...)   My IT guys at work said it was a motherboard problem, which HP technical support confirmed.  I'm not convinced.  I have since replaced the computer with a MacBook, and will never purchase HP product again.
