hp g61-329ca power button issue

I'm working on a friends HP G61-329ca. It has been fully reformatted from the recovery partition. It's running windows 7 home premium 64bit. The problem seems to be with the power button. the original battery was bad so there isn't one in it right now. If the laptop is left powered off and unplugged for even an hour or less the power button doesn't always work. I either unplug the power and plug it back in or turn the ac plug in the socket and keep pushing the power a few more times and it eventually starts up. Once it's powered on that first time I can turn it off and on as much as i want or leave it turned off overnight, as long as it's still plugged in it will turn right back on first try. It only happens if it is unplugged for awhile then plugged back in and try to start it up. When i plug in the ac adapter the little light beside the plug comes on every time. I've tried re-seating the ram and hard drive, pulled it completely apart, everything looks okay to me on the board but i'm not professionally trained. it has started to really drive me nuts lol. any suggestions on what could be wrong? or possibly how to fix it?

Take a bright flashlight and check the DC socket on the notebook where the power cord connects, see if it is damaged at the center pin.

Ordered and changed the ac plug and so far so good. ty for the reply!
