Sudden stoppage of the SimplePass service can sometimes be restarted by a Hard Reset of the Notebook. This reconnects the hardware devices and may send a signal to the fingerprinter to start working again with the SimplePass software.
Hard Reset:
Sometimes all you need to do is kick the computer. This method works for a variety of connection and ‘stuck’ program issues.
- Disconnect all external devices first.
- Remove AC power and the battery
- Press and hold power button for at least 30 seconds
- Reinstall only AC power for first startup ** See Note
- Power on - Log in
- Next time you shut down the system, reinstall battery.
** Note: If time is short, reinstall battery the first time and be done with it.
Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues
SimplePass Rules:
- Hardware devices are controlled by the Drivers - always install / reinstall the Validity Sensor Drivers first.
- Software / Programs are what is used to interact with the hardware - install the SimplePass software after the driver.

Hi Nitr0m4n,
Did you delete the original webcard that was "locked out"? If it's still in there, it may take precedence. It's important to remove the original and create a new entry for that URL.
Another possibility might present if you created the card but didn't go in and add the last bits - that of hand adding the Userid and the Password.

Hi Anisfarooq,
If you use Digital Persona:
You cannot use SimplePass (Egis or HP 2011 / 2012) on a system architecture on which Digital Persona runs. If your machine runs DP, it's meant to run THAT software. You cannot run the other. If you bought a computer with SimplePass, you cannot just take it off and run Digital Pesona. The two programs don't cross over. It gets worse - Egis SimplePass doesn't run everywhere either.
You can get this untangled by using Safe Mode boot. Safe Mode is a partial boot up of your computer - the essentials are there, but the fancy stuff does not start. It's a good troubleshooting tool and allows you to log in and fix issues that would ordinarily be more difficult (or impossible) to access. You'll have to log in using your typed password, of course.
Enter Safe Mode at startup (after a complete shut down - cold start):
To start in safe mode in Win 7, do the following steps:
1. Remove all CDs and DVDs from the computer. Make sure all peripherals such as printers and USB drives are also disconnected.
2. Press the power button to restart the computer and immediately press the f8 key repeatedly. (Bang gently on the key until the system responds...)
3. When prompted, select the Safe Mode with Networking option.
4. Log onto the computer with a user account that has administrator rights.
==================================================
Uninstall the Egis SimplePass software
Uninstall any New Validity Sensor Driver you installed to go along with the SimplePass s/w
First Install the 2.1X Vailidity Sensor Driver for Digital Persona (Driver always first)
Install Digital Persona software
Import your Digital Persona Backup
Boot into regular Windows
and you'll be OK again.
The DP software and drivers are probably at your computer's website.
Start above at Support and Drivers and enter your computer's information.

Hi Anisfarooq,
Yes, I can provide the information. You will need to completely remove the Egis SimplePass before you do anything else, though. That has to come off, including any drivers you loaded to go with it.
It's best if you take my previous advice and use the software from your own computer's website to be sure to get the DP that is best suited for your hardware and software.
- Find below my Digital Persona Installation Guide V1.2
- The first section shows you how to find your computer's website and your driver and software.
- If you want to try and use the software links shown in the Guide, follow the update instructions so your product will be properly updated when you are finished installing. There is no guarentee this software will work with your hardware. Be sure you pay attention to the 32 or 64bit packages - they are not interchangeable - use only the one for your OS.
==================================================
Digital Persona Installation V1.2
The purpose of the document is to facilitate the installation (or reinstallation) of the Validity Sensor Driver and the Digital Persona Software. Read through the document before starting – there are extra steps intended to help in the event there are installation issues. Depending on your situation, most the steps are not necessary for successful installation.
Hint: Close other programs before using this procedure – You will need at least one Restart / Reboot for most installations.
Assure that you have copies of your driver and software installation packages:
Go to the top of this Forum page - to Support and Drivers
- Enter your notebook model number
- Open the HP web page for your Product / Model
- Go to the Software and Drivers Downloads page
- Enter your Operating System
- Scroll down - Go to category Driver – Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices
- Select “Validity Fingerprint Sensor Driver” (Newest Version)
- Save this installation package onto your computer. Make a note of the file's NAME and its location.
- Go to category Software - Security section and click to open it.
- Select the Digital Persona package
- Save this installation package onto your computer. Make a note of the file's NAME and its location.
If you do not have the Driver and / or the Software package(s) in your website, you may check for compatibility, download, and use the following installation packages.
Digital Persona Versions – software and driver versions “go together”:
Digital Persona V4.x to V5.x- software controls the password database
Goes with
Validity Sensor 2.0x to 2.1x - driver controls the fingerprint hardware
--------------------------------------------------
Drivers:
Most notebooks will use sp45020 without problems (dv4-8, Compaq, etc)
Validity Sensor Driver sp45020 V2.1.0.2
The HDX 16 and HDX 18 may like this driver better:
Validity Sensor Driver - HDX - sp41660 V1.3.1.183
Software (may or may not work on your system):
Digital Persona 32bit sp43882 V4.0.1.3749_32
Digital Persona 64bit sp43883 V4.0.1.3749_64
To Use Driver you have downloaded:
See section Install New / Replacement Validity Sensor Driver (sp*)
Make a Backup - Export Digital Persona Software:
If you have a previous version of the Digital Persona software installed, you may have to remove it. If possible - IF the software is still viable (usable), first create an Export of the password database before you remove the program. See the section Export the Database.
Remember: Install Drivers FIRST - THEN the software.
Check for Current Validity Sensor Driver Version
One of the paths to get this information…
Control Panel > “view by” icons > Biometric Devices > Properties > Driver >
Look at “Driver Version”
Check for Current Digital Persona Software Version:
Control Panel > Programs and Features > Scroll down (sort by Name, if desired) >
Look for (HP) Digital Persona > Look in Column “Version”
Different (Re) Installation Options for the Validity Sensor Driver
NOTES on Installation Issues:
If you have problems installing the Driver:
- Add registry cleaning before the Reboot (or “Scan for Hardware Changes”) See “Tools List”
- Before or after an install attempt, you may try an “Update”. Results vary depending on what is on the computer now and what’s available as a replacement.
Almost all “nasty” problems with Digital Persona can be tracked back to stubborn driver issues. If you continue to have issues, try cleaning out the registry after each attempt: Software and Driver uninstallations leave “bits” in the registry. Most of the time, these are not harmful – the registry is built to handle “bits”: Sometimes, the registry can become mired. This can happen anytime, it may be more likely when one is adding and removing registry entries several times. Installing and removing Software and Drivers adds and removes registry entries.
Reinstall your Current Validity Sensor Driver:
- Control panel > Device Manager > Biometric Devices > Validity Sensor > Uninstall
- Scan For Hardware Changes (or Restart / Reboot)
Install New / Replacement Validity Sensor Driver (sp*):
Anytime there is a previous version of the driver on the computer, it may need to be removed. The “Delete” driver option removes the current driver. NOTE: Do not remove the existing driver unless you are sure you have a replacement driver ready to install.
- Control panel > Device Manager > Biometric Devices > Validity Sensor > Uninstall > Delete
- Reboot … or, at the least, consider cleaning the Registry (See Tools List)
- Install the Validity Sensor Driver installation package: It will be named sp*.exe – the package will most likely be located in the Downloads folder. If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package and “double-click” to install it, else Right-Click, Select ‘run as Administrator’ and install.
Installation from the Device Manager
Sometimes the driver just will not reinstall properly. Installing from a previously installed package sometimes works when nothing else will provide results.
Installation from SWSetup:
If the driver package is still on the system from a previous installation attempt, it is located in C:\SWSetup\sp*.
You can tell the Device Manager to access and install the Installation package on the system:
Control Panel > icons > Device Manager > Biometric Devices > Right-Click Validity Sensor … >
Update Driver Software > Browse my computer for driver software
Browse to C:\SWSetup\sp*
o Input the exact name of the installation package in place of “sp*”
o Be sure the “Include Subfolders” box is CHECKED
Installation from the Driver Store (device drivers already in the computer):
Unless they are removed, all device drivers are stored in the computer. It’s a bit tedious to track them down and one needs a specialized program to reuse these drivers. Fortunately, the system keeps track of the drivers it needs and can frequently reinstall a driver from this source. All you need to know is the correct Version; for example “2.1.0.2”.
Control Panel > icons > Device Manager > Biometric Devices > Right-Click Validity Sensor … >
Update Driver Software > Browse my computer for driver software >
Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my system >
Select the proper device Version from the list > Next
Restart / Reboot the computer
Install Digital Persona Software:
If there is an installed version of Digital Persona and it is operational, you should make a backup of it before proceeding. See Export the Database.
- Anytime there is a previous version of Digital Persona on your system, you may need to remove it: Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features > find the program and Uninstall it
- Clean the registry (or Restart the computer). This step is optional and recommended.
- Find the installation package of Digital Persona you downloaded. It will be named sp*.exe – the package will most likely be located in the Downloads folder. If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package and “double-click” to install it, else Right-Click, Select ‘run as Administrator’ and install.
Update Software Digital Persona Version from 4.01 to 4.11.x
- There is one more update for Digital Persona. You'll be able to update from within the program to 4.11.x once the 4.0.1 version is installed on your computer and set up.
- Open Digital Persona 4.01, complete the basics to get it set up: enter your windows password; enroll fingerprint(s)...
- Then, while DP is still open, Select / go to "Get Latest Backups"
- Click "Check now for software updates" and let it go look for the update. Click to install the update.
- This is the one update (available from Digital Persona on the Internet); this update will get you up to version 4.11.x
- Once you have the completed the update to 4.11.x, that's it.
- If you have one, Import your latest backup of your *.DPXD password file.
Done!
==================================================
Export the DP Database / Make a Backup:
Start/Open Digital Persona > scan your fingerprint to open > Online Accounts > Manage >
See Import and Export > Select Export
> Export online account data from this computer >
Scan your fingerprint > type your password >
Browse to your selected folder > type in a name > Finish
Keep the Export file safe. Re-export on a regular basis. If you have to reinstall your software, you will be able to use this file to restore your passwords.
Tools List:
Registry Cleaner – CCleaner (Download the free version):
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
NOTE about using CCleaner: IF you use the Applications cleaner tab in CCleaner (this is a separate section from the registry cleaner), be sure to check/uncheck the items in the program list or CCleaner might remove things you may want to keep.
Speccy - System Information Tool – Select and install the Free Version:
http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download
Sidebar: Speccy contains a core / CPU temperature monitor in its box of tools.
NOTES on Registry Cleaners:
Registry cleaners will usually do no harm – however, anytime you affect the registry with changes, you risk your system’s stability. CCleaner does include the offer to make a backup of your registry prior to making any changes.
If you select to download and install another registry cleaner, please uninstall CCleaner. One of these things on the system at a time is enough…
If a registry Cleaner does not offer to do a backup prior to making changes: be sure you EXPORT the registry manually PRIOR to using the cleaner. If anything happens that you don’t expect, you will have an extra layer of protection on which to fall back.
IMO: Stay away from Registry Mechanic. I have had this on my systems – it has been cleansed, removed, deleted, and dropped in the Zeros bucket. This is a Personal Opinion.
