im getting a missing operating system after being online now i only have a black screen

i was on line then i got a string of rapid error messages then it blacked out , now it says it has no operating system upon start up  its a hp pavillion ze5400 with windows xp home edition

Can you get into the bios? Check to see if your hard drive is even recognized.  I believe you have a hard drive problem but need to see if it is hardware or software.  If the bios see the hard drive, try to get into the HP utilities and run the hard drive test and the memory test. If the bios does not see the hard drive, the circuit board on the bottom of the drive has failed.
