Help us help you. We need to know the model of the laptop and about how old it is, what kind of Windows it has and a bit more about what is is doing like a better description of the noise (grinding, whining, etc.). You may just need a new battery, but it could be many things.

Re: laptop goes off automatically, batteries are fully charged

I have the same problem. hpzt3340us 3 yrs. old.  Makes a clicking sound as the on/off lights flash then shuts off.  I can wait a few min. and it does the same thing and then it only lasts seconds and finally wil not even try to com on at all, and then has a hot smell to it. But when it trys to come on the fan does run.

I plugged it in with out the batt. and nothing happened at all.    I have considered the batt. but hate to invest that much not knowing if it is the problem.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Henry

Re: laptop goes off automatically, batteries are fully charged

try removing the battery, unplug the power cable 30 secs and plug in it again. Power on the laptop. It worked for me.
Every time I power off/on i got to do that. I guess is some bad digital component in the mainboard.
