my laptop hangs on starting?

When I boot the computer, the computer would hang on starting and nothing but a black screen appears. I would have to turn it off and then restart. When I go to the problem reports and solutions, the program would report a certain problem as the progarm that caused the hanging. What is the problem? Is it the hard drive? my is a pavilion dv4 1123us.

What program is being reported in Problem Reports and Solutions?  Provide as much detail as possible!

The programs that caused the problem were the idt pc audio and the hp quickplay. specifically for idt pc audio is stacsv.64
