this machine has several USB ports. I was assuming i would need to use one of them.......but then again, i really don't know what my port replicator options would be.....thus the essence of the original question.

Purchase a powered USB hub and connect it to your notebook. The hub is delivered with its own power supply and does not use the notebook's power to supply 5v to USB devices connected to it.
