98 and 95 ink cartridges

Are there any current photo printers that use 98 and 95 ink cartridges?  I just opened a brand new box of them and after installing them my printer no longer works.

Re: 98 and 95 ink cartridges

From your statement, I am assuming that your printer was working before installing the new cartridges?  I am curious what happened up to this point that has you looking for a different printer.

Here is a link to a list of compatible HP printers for the HP 95/98 Inkjet Print Cartirdges:

Re: 98 and 95 ink cartridges

It's been an ongoing problem and I'm just fed up with it. The printer hasn't worked for several days (I accidently bumped it and the red exclamation started flashing) and finally my husband got it working again only to discover it was low on ink (trying to print pictures).  I switched out the cartridges and the red exclamation point starts flashing and a dash starts doing circles around the screen.  This happens EVERY time I change the cartridges (at least the last 3 or 4 cartridge changes).  After a lot of frustration and unplugging and plugging back in it eventually comes around.  I played with it for well over an hour today and it just will not work.

Re: 98 and 95 ink cartridges

[ Edited ]

I would not give up on your printer, yet, unless you just are ready to upgrade. Since you did not list the printer product number I can't look to see if there is a current manual available on HP for it.  I can only guess at some possible fixes.  First, I would unplug the interface cable and the power plug from the printer.  Press and hold the Power button down for 10 to 15 seconds.  On many HP printers this will Reset the printer and tends to fix a lot of issues.  On some printers you have to complete the alignment after changing the cartridges before the printer becomes functional.

If the HP cartridges are refills from a third party, there may be an issue with the onboard chip that has not been reset.

Anyway:smileyhappy:

The 98 and95 are compatible with these HP Deskjet, Officejet, and Photosmart printers.

You should go to hp.com and look up the printers to verify this information, or if you decide to

purchase one of the printers.

Re: 98 and 95 ink cartridges

Shouldn't the alignment start automatically after installing new cartridges?  It never does.  Also, I tried both of the suggested resets from the printer's help page and neither of those worked.  It's a D5160.

Re: 98 and 95 ink cartridges

Good.  You have tried both resets, which means you did some searching on your own.

According to the information for the 5100 series I found at this link,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00725668&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...

the Exclaimation is a General indicator of an error status of some kind on the printer.  My thoughts;

A. Bump printer and a red light flashes, indicating intervention needed. Many times the printer will think a cover/door is open). I do not see an indicator that specifically points this out, so check all (door covering the ink cartridges, The CD cover, the rear cover, the top cover, etc)

   1.   For a magnet or small metal disk that has fallen off.  Some printers use the magnet to activate a switch.

   2.  A tab on the cover that should either push a switch.

   3.  A tab that inserts between a "U" shaped sensor and block the led light.

   4.  If you can, check and see if any wires have come loose any of these switches.

   5.  Open the CD and close it, if you can.

   6.  If you have a memory chip in the printer, remove and reinstall it.

B.  The Exclaimation with circling dash is not listed on the chart, or the manual.  Ar you seeing this on the printer, or the computer.  From my experience this is usually relates to something initailizing. Usually, if left alone it will complete over time (or come up with another error :smileyfrustrated:

Re: 98 and 95 ink cartridges

Thanks for trying to help.  I let it sit for a while because it was really making me frustrated.  I really needed to do some printing today so I thought I'd see if I could get it going and I made some progress, but now I'm right back where I started.  I reset, plugged in, immediately did a cartridge alignment (since I got the error fixed and then it started up again after changing the cartridges).  After it printed the error came right back.

Re: 98 and 95 ink cartridges

One more thing.....when I did the cartridge alignment only the black printed.  The color did not.  Could it be that I have a defective cartridge?  It's an HP brand cartridge.
