C309a AIO printing on 5.5 x 8.5 paper resulting in Paper Mismatch error

[ Edited ]
I have a 5.5x8.5 inch document (an invitation) that I have tried to print from Acrobat Reader, MS Word 2007, and OpenOffice 3.1.

Acrobat Reader printed something, but the text was offset about 1 inch right and down. It also changed the paper size in the "Print" dialog to be 6.93x9.84in. the moment I selected the C309a printer.

The other two programs resulted in the printer saying "Paper Mismatch Press OK to cancel job".

I would like to fix this mismatch. I want to type the number "5.5" in one place and the number "8.5" in another place to  force the printer to accept this document size.

In the "HP Photosmart C309a series Properties" dialog accessible from the various program print dialogs, I see a scant seven (7) choices for paper size:

A4 210x297mm
Letter 8.5x11in.
Legal 8.5x14in.
HV 101x180mm
Photo card 10x20 cm (tab)
B7 (JIS) 91x128mm
B7 (ISO) 88x125mm

As an aside, none of these correspond to the 6.93x9.84in. size chosen by Acrobat.

Note: If this is a Vista 64-bit issue, as so many other people seem to be having, is there any hope for us or should I switch to another OS (Linux?)It seems like a lot of people have paper size problems, but I have not discovered any good answers to these problems.

Once I finish printing on 5.5x8.5in paper, I have a slew of other size papers to print, so I need some way to specify the size in general.

I am printing over wireless, but I have had no material problems doing that with 8.5x11in paper.

I have tried to double-check error messages and provide all the information requested, but if there's something I left out, I will be happy to update it.

Re: C309a AIO printing on 5.5 x 8.5 paper not working on vista 64

I think I've solved this problem.  If you experience a "Paper Mismatch" error due to an unusual size of paper, try these steps.

1. Open the "HP Photosmart C309a series Properties" dialog from the program's Print dialog.
2. Click the Features tab. Under "Resizing Options", open the "Size:" drop-down.
3. First select "More...". Look in the "Size is:" dialog. If your paper size is listed here, choose it and try printing.

If your paper size is not listed:

4. Click "Cancel" in the "Size is: dialog.
5. Open the "Size:" drop-down and select "Custom" to open the "Custom Paper Size" dialog.

6. Choose a Name and enter the width and height of your paper.

CAUTION: Be careful in choosing the Name of your custom paper size. There is no obvious way to delete the new size.

SUGGESTION: Specify the paper size in the Name field, for example: "Half Sheet 5.5x8.5in."

You are limited to 30 characters for the name.

7. Click OK in the "Custom Paper Size".

From now on, this custom size will appear at the bottom of the "Size is:" dialog accessible by choosing "More..." in the "Size:" field.

8. Make sure your desired size is selected in the "Size:" drop down.

In the future you may always need to use the "Features" tab to select your custom paper size.

To  delete a custom size paper previously saved:

PRINTER PROPERTIES>RESIZE OPTION>CUSTOM  then type in the name of the previously saved custom size that you want to delete.  At this point the delete button is no longer grayed out and you can delete the custom size.  Close the properties box, reopen it and you should see the custom size has been deleted.  It worked for me, hope it will work for you.
