C7250 printer problem

When printing I get a message saying the black ink cartridge is empty. However the cartridge is full and I even replaced it with another new cartridge. The printer info also shows a full black cartridge. Given this situation, the printer appears to be using the color cartridges to simulate black and that is expensive. Thanks for any help.
