Deskjet D4260 and Vista - Properties changes won't save

Have Vista Home Premium on an HP computer and use an HP Deskjet D4260 printer.

I go into the printer properties and set them so that the printer will not use the color cartridge, but use black ink only. That works for one document, but for the next document, it goes right back to using the color cartridge (when that occurs, I think it also uses the color cartridge to make black, which is a horrendous waste of ink, but profitable for HP).

Every time I have changed the printer properties to print using black ink only, I have made sure that I "save" and/or "apply" the settings. The system refuses to keep the black-ink-only settings.

This occurs whether the documents are all-black only, some color, or all color.

This occurs regardless of program I am printing from: browser (IE8 and Firefox 3.5.1), word processor (Office 2007, OpenOffice 3.1) or anything else.

How can I force the printer settings to save and stay put at use black ink only? Which driver files do I have to hack, and how?

Thanks,

Moxieman

Hello moxieman,

To change the default print settings, change it in the Printing Preferences from the Printers folder in the Control Panel: open Printers, right click on the D4260 (should be called Deskjet D4200 series I'd think) and then click on Printing Preferences.

Hey, that worked, Pontus_N. Earlier today I also uninstalled and reinstalled my OfficeJet software on the instructions of a tech support person. You saved me from having to get back in touch with tech support. Thank you so much!
