I received the error message - replace magenta or choose to print without it. Went out and got a new Magenta, installed it. Diagnostics are now showing a full bar under magenta but no matter what I do it won't recognize it when choosing to print and continues to tell me to replace it or continue without printing without magenta.
I've installed the latest and greatest updates and have restarted twice - no change.

Hi there nhamman,
This article is intended for missing ink cartridge errors but has the same steps to rectifying ink cartidge issue you are experiencing. Give the steps a shot and let us know if it helps out.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately the last time I tried to print and told it to continue without the magenta it now continues every time without the magenta. I don't get the error message anymore and it won't try printing no matter what I do with the magenta. I thought maybe the magenta was defective and got a new one, it still won't try to print with the magenta. I followed the process - unplugged the printer and waited. Still won't print with magenta. I took a soft cloth and cleaned the copper plating with bottled water, it still won't print with the magenta. I tried putting the old magenta cartridge back in that I originally replaced, nothing.
When I purchased another magenta a couple days ago it recognized a new magenta but it won't print with it.

I wanted to add, your solution did work. I applied what you gave then did a clean the printheads through the toolbox and now all is working successfully. Thank you very much!

You followed the article that John linked above? I did all that and then went into the printer toolbox and cleaned the printer heads and everything worked.
What it said in the article, unplug the cord from the unit and wait 30 seconds - try again.
Clean the copper plating with a q-tip or soft cloth with bottled water (not tap) and try again.
Purchase new magenta.
I had purchased a new magenta before John responded. But, I put in the previous one and it has worked fine since I followed the above and cleaned the printerheads.
