GETTING A JAM ERROR CODE WITH NOTHING IN THE MACHINE

WE ARE GETTING AN 86:01 ERROR CODE ON OUR L25500. THIS WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A LOAD POP.  WE ARE NOW UNABLE TO GET THIS CODE TO CLEAR, AND WHEN THE PRINTER REBOOTS, AND MOVES TO THE LEFT SIDE IT HANGS, AS THOUGH IT IT STRIKING SOMETHING.  WE HAVE DETERMINED THAT THERE IS NO REMNANT MEDIA LEFT, BUT THERE IS A SMALL SWITCH THAT THE CARRIAGE APPARENTLY IS STRIKING.  OF COURSE THIS ALL HAPPENS WHEN HP SERVICE IS GONE FOR THE HOLIDAYS AND I HAVE A DEADLINE.  

CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT THE SWITCH IN QUESTION IS FOR, AND IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, CAN I REMOVE FROM THE WAY OR COMPLETELY FROM THE MACHINE?
