HP 2840 falls asleep

My 2840 dies after a few hours of idle time. I will have to turn it off and then back on for it to come back alive. If I try to print I get an error. I get error in status tab on tools menu. I'm hooked up via USB with no sharing. The computer is using XP pro. Any ideas? I read a post somewhere about an incompatibility with Intel USB chipsets but haven't been able to confirm it. A few others have similar problems but I haven't seen a solution.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Re: HP 2840 falls asleep

Here is the link to the document you need to troubleshoot USB Chipset issues with your printer:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00389231&jumpi...

Also, make certain your printer is connected directly to the wall (no extension cord, no power bar, no surge protector or UPS).  Another thing to check is what else is plugged in on the same circuit?  A minor brownout (drop in power being supplied) can cause these units to become locked in sleep mode so make sure it's not sharing the same circuit as the microwave, fridge, or other electrical appliance that cycles on and off.  You also need to make sure your firmware is up to date.

Good Luck!!

Re: HP 2840 falls asleep

Adding a PCI USB card and connecting the printer to it did the trick for me. I tried updating chipset drivers and BIOS without success. The problem was on a fairly new Dell Vostro computer.
