HP C3180 Printer chooses to print in colors instead of black ink

For months and months now, the printer decides its going to print B&W documents in red. I specifically typed the business letter in black and it does not look real professional in some rainbow array of reds and maybe bits of blue and tints pastels of green, etc. When I COPY it, it then comes out black so we know the printer could print in black is appropriately motivated (although some of the fainter reds and other colors copy as grays)
I replaced the black cartridge and that changes nothing.
Then the very expensive color cartridge runs out of red ink and won't print at all - not even using the new black cartridge.
HELP. Really Frustrated.
{Google can find your thread on color ink problems -- but I haven't been able to find that thread on the HP Support Forum after I registered}

go to the tools bar and have the printer clean the cartridges; realign cartridges too.
