Went to replace Ink Cartridge in the HP Deskjet 6940 and now it isn't being recognized. Tried a second black ink cartridge as well and it doesn't recognize it either. Any suggestions?

I just started having the same problem, except that my replacement cartridge worked for about a week, then suddenly stopped in the middle of a print job and now is not recognized. Still looking for answers...

Have you checked whether the cartridge is out of ink? The status lights on the unit will blink if one of the cartridge is out of ink.
Also, do you get any error message on the computer? If yes, what is it? Are there any lights blinking on the printer? If yes, which lights are blinking?
Please mark reply as "Accept as Solution" if it solved the problem, so others can find it.

I'm having the same issue with my officejet 6480. I'm getting the "Cartridge error. Cartridge on right is not intended for use with this printer" message. Have run diagnostic, downloaded all applicable updates. The only falshing light on the printer is the exclamation mark over the cancel button. I am using a 74xl cartridge. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem with my 96 cartridge, original with the printer. I don't print much and it quit in the middle of a print job, gave me various errors like 'this is a refilled cartridge, cannot determine level ' and 'cartridge on right not recognized' and the light on the left hand side of the panel was blinking (6820 Deskjet). The store didn't have a replacement so this morning out of frustration I removed it from its new home in its little plastic wrapper in my purse and gave it a good look--noticed some ink crud globs on the silver print head area and at the corner on the gold dots side. I moistened a q-tip with some 91% isopropanol (Walgreens) and gently dabbed off the crud. I then gave it a gently pass with a tissue to remove the solvent, which left a black ink rectangle on the tissue. I also tried to clean the gold dots with some silver polish, but I don't think this helped and you shouldn't do this. Anyway I put it back in the printer, the printer put out a test page and the worked just fine, never any error. The cartridge felt rather heavy so I think it has a lot of ink left. I think Everclear would also work to clean the print head.
HTH..

(reply to my own post)
I saw on a site I got from googling '96 ink not recognized' that the print head ribbon has a 2dUPC code on it (near the silver part) so I am guessing an ink crud blob may have obscured part of this code leading to the weird errors....
here is the site-
