HP INK CARTRIDGES MALFUNCTIONING

I have used HP deskjet printers and cartridges for ten years.  I have three different printers in my house.  In the last six weeks I have experienced a new problem - cartridge electronic failure - twice in six weeks.  Two different printers, different cartridges, purchased new from Office Depot.  Given the expense of these little jewels, to have a cartridge fail when still half full is irritating, not to mention expensive.  Are others having this experience?  Does HP provide a warranty to replace failed cartridges.  ps - can't determine how much ink ithe cartridge has left because the electronics can not read the cartridge.

Are the cartridges HP or are they the Office Depot house brand (remanufactured)?  HP cartridges carry a warranty, see here for details.  I would also try cleaning the cartridge contacts as shown here.
