Hi VernaT,

Follow the steps below to properly configure your paper trays.

1. Touch (right arrow), touch Setup, touch Preferences, and then select Default Tray

2. Select Tray 2 as the Default tray

3. Open Printers and Faxes

4. Right click on printer, and then select Printer Properties

5. Click on Device Settings tab

6. On this screen set the media type you have assigned to each tray (Example: tray 1 - Envelopes & Tray 2 - Letter)

7. Click Apply, and then Ok

8. When you have an envelope you are printing it will pull from Tray 1

9. When you have a letter you are printing it will pull from Tray 2

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium

Yes, tray 2 is set as default.  Tray 1 is for letter, tray 2 is for legal.  I want the printer to print from the appropriate tray according to document size. I don't want everything printed on legal paper.

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium

Hi VernaT

Ok, If you want Legal in tray 2 then you will need to set the default tray to 1, and then when you want to print legal you will need to select the tray 2 instead of Automatic select. The other option is the leave tray 2 set as the default tray, and then put the letter in tray 2 with Legal in tray 1.

1. Open Printers and Faxes

2. Right click on printer, and then select Printer Properties

3. Click on Device Settings tab

4. On this screen set the media type you have assigned to each tray

  • Tray 1 = legal
  • Tray 2= Letter

5. Click Apply, and then Ok

6. When you have an envelope you are printing it will pull from Tray 1

7. When you have a letter you are printing it will pull from Tray 2

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium

So, this printer will not automatically choose the correct tray, I have to make a manual selection when I want to change paper sizes?

3. Click on Device Settings tab

4. On this screen set the media type you have assigned to each tray

  • Tray 1 = legal
  • Tray 2= Letter

5. Click Apply, and then Ok

6. When you have an envelope you are printing it will pull from Tray 1

7. When you have a letter you are printing it will pull from Tray 2
