I have changed my ink cartridges 3 times. ALL of them. I haven't had the printer for that long. I only print TEXT so only BLACK INK. And not that much of it either. SO why does all of the cartridges get used up? I cannot find anything where you can adjust or fix this problem. HELP as I don't have the money to keep buying all this ink.

What operating system? Some drivers have an option to "Print in grayscale" and "use black cartridge only". A few other suggestions: do not replace the color cartridges until the printer stops printing or there is a noticeable degradation in quality. The first warning is set to give time for you to have replacement supplies on hand. Printing in draft or fast normal mode will lengthen ink cartridge life.
See this page for information on how ink is used, the c309a is an "IIC" printer in the vocabulary of that page.
