My solution was to buy a Canon MP620, which those nice folk at Canon are offering £30 cashback on at the moment, so it's cost me £80. Bargain.
I have taken out my frustration on my old (and twice as expensive) HP7360 with an axe ... a sort of ceremonial slaying of a manufacturer that I won't be using for anything ever again ... I recommend this as a great way to move on from the many hours wasted trying to make the **bleep** thing work. I'll be selling the spare cartridges on eBayso hopefully HP will miss out on a bit of ink revenue from someone as well.
So way to go HP - ignoring a problem like this loses you business.

Shame on you HP! As a result of either purposely creating a machine that is suitable for the landfill immediately after the warranty expires or ignoring the same customer complaint over and over, there are many of us joining CaptainBlue.

I have just replaced my HP Photosmart D7360 with new cartridges and the printer says the yellow one is empty but it's not.
Sound familiar?
And now the games begin, with uninstalling and reinstalling software and drivers, trying new ink cartridges, resetting the machine, blah, blah, blah...
My only regret is that I recently bought an HP laptop computer. I wish I hadn't. I tend to divide computer brands into "trusted" and "suspect" categories. HP will forever be in the "suspect" category now - not equipment to be trusted! Should've forked out and got Apple-everything.

Well add me to the list, too. This is my second L7680 since November. Problems with the first one.....printed find but would not scan. It was determined through long hours with tech support that it was a hardware issue. They told me to send it back to them and they would send another one. Most of the time the one they send is not new, based on what I was told. So I took it back to the store and talked the manager into taking it back and give me a refund. So I bought a new one on sale....... Now for the new one.....I got the new one January 16 2009. First the message was there is no ink in the black cartridge and it was brand new. After messing with it for I don't know how long I finally got it to read, but the print job is awful. Many lines missing. Then it tells me the yellow cartridge is empty. I replaced it with a brand new one. It still reads empty. And on top of that everytime I try to print the machine goes through all it's checking device proceeders and keeps doing it over and over. I too have used HP printers for many years and thought they were great. Not any more. This is it for me buying anymore HP printer or any of their products. <text deleted>

This is the most insane, frustrating thing!!! My c6180 has worked fine for around 3 years (it was a replacement of the original c6180 model that also broke down conveniently after the warranty), and now, all of a sudden, the display reads empty Yellow even though it is brand new and full! I have tried two different cartridges (both genuine HP), unplugged, reset, spent almost 3 hours on a chat support session, and been up all night dealing with it, only to be told, as most of you, that I need a new printer!
I just purchased a new HP laptop about 2 weeks ago after much deliberation between Apple and PC. I noticed another post where someone did that as well. The good news is that I can still return the laptop. My only problem is I am used to the video/photo software I use on PC and am concerned about the switch-over to MAC software. BUT - after reading these posts, I think I may have to make the leap!
YEARS and YEARS of ridiculous error messages and freeze-ups on pc's and their related products have almost driven me to the brink! I can't do it anymore - MAC, here I come!!!!
I agree with another blog who is having an 'axing' ceremony - I'm going to join you!

Same here too: My HP Photosmart C5180 All-in-One has decided the yellow cartridge is empty and refuses to print anything in any color.
It's a brand new #02 HP yellow cartridge. It's the second new cartridge I've tried and I've also tried 'rebooting' the printer and down loading the latest drivers and I even tried reinserting the (ink laden) cartridge with tape over the sensor holes (as per a previous post). All to no avail. (I did get yellow ink on my fingers). The cartridge package has a date of May 2011 on it and on the actual cartridge itself.
Having spent an unreasonable amount of time in the past trying to resolve computer related problems, I have switched from PCs to Macs and have never looked back. I will now switch from HP printers to Epsom (my other printer is an Epsom and it's great), and I will recommend, having read many other posts, that other people do the same. Life is too short and the guy with the axe has the right idea.
