J4680c All-in-One printer "INK" cartridge issue

My wife just purchased this printer for her home business use.  We purchased the printer in early February 2010.  Since that time we have used 2 black ink cartridges, with the 2nd cartridge only lasting a month.  This is highly unusual in that we would normally use an ink cartride once every 3 months on average, maybe longer.  Is there something we can adjust on the printer to use less ink???  The first cartridge came with the printer so I thought it might have sat on a shelf for an extended period, but the second one was ordered from HP.  Help!

The standard 901 black cartridge is rated at 200 pages.  You may have better satisfaction with the 901xl which is rated at 700 pages at about 2x the price.
