When I go to "preferences" it doesn't offer me "color". If I choose "advanced" I'm not sure what I'm supposed to select. Any clues?

could you provide the community with a little more information to help narrow troubleshooting? What operating system are you using?

Being non-techie, I'm never sure what your asking. But I'm using windows XP on a Dell dimension c521 tyring to print color pictures from "My Pictures" file. I printer DOES print color copies, but nothing from the computer and will not screen print either.

Its ok even techies started out as non-techies at one point . You operating system is what runs your computer. In this case Windows XP. Thank you for the additional info. Lets download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, it is located here. It can resolve a lot on its own or at least give us a better idea of what is going on. Give it a shot and post back the results.

It said everything checked out OK. I doubled checked "preferences" but nothing changed. I printer a test page and got a b/w copy.
Still colorless in Columbus!

Hmm, if everything checks out lets take a look at those printer preferences one last time before we go to uninstall/reinstall. In the printer's preferences click the advanced button. In the window that pops up check the grayscale option. Set it to off, if you cannot check a little further down be sure resolution is not set to black and white only.
