New Printer but won't work

I just hooked up my HP D4300 and it only prints in faded black or grey. The color seems to work fine but it will not print properly in black. when it does print in deep black it will print one row of text very well then only print the top half of the next row then skip the row after that before starting over again and printing one row perfect. Any suggestions?
