Headbear, thank you for resposting those instructions. They worked! I can't imagine how much time people have wasted cleaning parts inside when this is clearly a problem HP should be addressing. I could not find these reset instructions anywhere else but from you in this thread. You saved me a ton of time and saved HP a returned printer. I'm still a bit angry for the lack of support directly from HP on this, however and am considering returning it if one more thing goes wrong. It took long enough for them to just update the firmware so that its advertized functions worked properly. I've been more than generous in sticking with them.

The reset works for me also - but why would I have to do this over and over again? This is the 3rd time in a month that the black ink on my 6500A quit working. And the second time in 5 days that I have had to run this reset. What is causing it? Is my printer going bad? It is only about a year and half old and I don't even print that much.

Make sure you are only turning off the printer with its power switch and that the printer is always plugged into a live outlet.  If you turn off the printer from an external switch the printhead may be left uncaped causing the printhead to clog.

Thanks, the printer is left turned on most days. When there is a problem I will try turning it off and back on again, but only via the power button on the consol.

You might try cleaning the printhead as described in this post.  Also make sure the vents are clear on the ink supply.

I did everything that you wrote, step-by-step. Also, took all the cartridges out and the cartridge holder plus cleaned the bottom of that holder after doing the partial reset. It still only prints the colors but not in black (has a brand new HP double size black cartridge (not a refill). Tried a 2nd NEW HP black ink cartridge. Still will not print in black. HELPPPPPP!!! Please

This is the critical step: Perform a Partial Reset from the Support Menu

1. Find the Curved Back Arrow by pressing the little forward arrow ( the Curved Back Arrow is not visilble from home screen)

2. Go back to home screen

3. tap the location 4 times where the Curved Back Arrow was showing on Step 1 (its not illuminated now).

4. You are now in the Support Menu. Go forward to Resets Menu. Find and perform a Partial Reset.

5. If the printer does not restart in 30 seconds hit the Power Button.

6. After going through the setup procedures , Language etc. The printer should now work. This step fixed mine so it would print black again.

(I have reposted this from the solution posted by someone earlier...This worked perfectly without going thru the "cleaning" process which just sounded time consuming and worrysome.  Your settings are saved so it was an easy way to fix whatever seems to be ailing the printer.)

Hello fitzie,

I am sorry to see you are having issues with your Officejet 6500A Plus not printing in black ink. I noticed you have already cleaned the printhead a few times and that did not resolve your issue. I have researched this issue for you and found a troubleshooting guide that I recommend following.

I hope this helps you!

@ Rainbow7000: Thank you very much for taking the time to help BUT.... I went back and did the following:

1) checked the venting on each of the four cartridges (the colors printed okay before and still do). The new black cartridge did not have a vent opening so we did that with a pin

2) did another partial reset (alignment failed again)

3) removed all 4 cartridges and removed the printhead & cleaned it per the instructions on the link you sent

4) printer wanted another alignment done.... and it failed again

5) did a test print after each of the aforementioned steps... still, no black printing

6) do not know what else I can do to kick this printer in the a$$, lol
