Here's how I reset my J6400 to a fixed IP and then got HP SolutionCentre to recognize it:
- use the J6400 "tools" button to print Network Configuration Page
(this gives the SSID name, network mask, etc)
- ControlPanel, Printers, r-click on J6400, Properites, click on IP address to open J6400 console
- (J6400 console) Settings, Network, change DHCP to "Manual"
- put in address outside DHCP range, in my case 192.168.1.11
(DHCP almost always starts at .100, and routers etc start at .1, so .10 - .90 is safe)
- ControlPanel, rclick printer, find Ports tab, AddNewPort, choose std-TCP/IP, put in 192.168.1.11
(not sure if this step was necessary? it was on a "WSD" port before)
- ControlPanel, set J6400 as default, check Word/OpenOffice prints to it OK
- Windows StartMenu, AllProgs, HP folder, J6400 folder, find "ConfigureNetworkDevice"
(you also find "AddADevice", but this simply doesn't work!)
- follow the instructions in "ConfigureNetworkDevice", always choosing "Manual"
(this app gets you to plug the J6400 temporarily by USB to your laptop, then READS the IP settings from the printer into SolutionCentre on your laptop!)
- open SolutionCentre, check the J6400 shows "Connected", print to it.
All works fine, except I can't access the scanner. Maybe I shouldn't have changed the port type? (The J6400 scanner appears as a separate device.)

Hi,
Try the steps as listed by carrt7. It should be the one above your post. Let us know if it worked or not.

Tried it once when carrt7 first posted it and it just hung when I tried to change it so quit. Now it's even worse than it was. Have to unplug and replug to get it to print at all. Tried again based on HP response. Directions said to open properties, which showed nothing so opened printer properties. Nothing to click on - the IP and host address was there but just as info. Am I supposed to go somewhere other than printer properties or properties?

Correction - I followed Medic1 originally and it hung. I'm now on Windows 7 so maybe that's why directions from carrt7 don't work? Anyway, still have problem and no solution.

@Wallcmp
Try Step 5 on the document I linked below. It should give you the steps to set a static IP for the printer.

@Everyone
This is a tough issue to break. Has anyone tried connecting the printer via ethernet just to see if the issue persists? I am wondering if it is isolated to just wireless connectivity rather than a general network connectivity issue.

Medic1 You are AWESOME! I have been fighting with this issue for 2 years. This worked like a charm! Thank You, Thank You!
