Repost for experts...
New N911A will not feed photo paper from default tray. It gives an out of paper message. Plain paper feeds fine. The optional paper tray is not installed (I do not have one). This is a brand new out of the box machine replacing a C7280 wtih ink carriage failure. I have used this paper in all my previous HP printers with no issues. It is HP Advanced Photo paper (66lb/10.5 mil, auto sense)
There appears to be other posters with the same issue.

My HP 8600 won't pick up photo paper. This is a replacement for one I purchased 1 week ago, and it has the same problem. I have looked at the forums, and applied the fixes without success. I am using HP PP photo paper and am disappointed that such a simple problem can absorb so much of my time. My print setting are for photo paper, I have loaded plenty of paper, the printer is brand new(again), it prints plain paper fine, all programs fail to pick up photo paper. Please give me a real fix.

I also have a brand new, out of the box, 8600 which will not feed photo paper-using HP Premium Photo paper. Regular paper feeds no problem, but when trying to print on heavier stock I get an "out of paper" error after the printer tries to pick up a new sheet.

I have the exact same problem. HP Officejet Pro 8600 will not feed HP Advance Photo Paper Glossy. Brand new out of the box. Any suggestions?

I managed to find a temporary solution as i need to print a photo urgently :
I sticked a piece of scotchtape along the top border of the paper (on the back side) and then it could feed. And i don't know why, but after this first print with scotchtape, the next photo papers would feed normally.
I hope it helps you guys. See the picture:
