Photosmart Premium Inks Don't last

I do not use my printer daily but the ink cartridges go empty very fast and I wind up only being able to print a few pages before I have to replace the cartridges.  I turn the printer off between uses but this does not seem to extend the life of the cartridges.  I replaced the original cartridges that I only got a few pages out of with new cartridges and an XL Black and it is out of ink after a couple of months and a dozen pages.  This is pretty disappointing performance.  Any suggestions or other mode of standby that can keep the ink?
