Printer connection with computer

I replaced an HP All-in-One 6200 printer with a new HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus 911g. The old connection worked, but I am unable to connect the 8600 with my computer. I have tried following instructions to use a USB connection, but without any luck.
I have followed all instructions included with the new printer, but obviously am missing something. I'm not a computer expert, but note that I had no trouble with the connection with the 6200 setup. Something must be different with the new 8600. My computer uses Windows XP, and nothing in it has changed. The printer works just fine, but the computer connection has me stumped. Any help will be appreciated.

Did you uninstall the old printer?
Try running the HP print diag. utility.
